About Francesca Barton

In her paintings and illustrations, hand-made decorations, and bespoke furniture, Francesca Barton evokes the boundless imagination of childhood. As the mother of four young children, inspiration for playful design is always close at hand. Drawing, too, on her Finnish roots, and many a summer spent in the forested outskirts of Helsinki, Francesca's crafts and designs are reminiscent both of Scandinavia's sparseness and its rich tradition of decorative grandeur. Simplicity, light and space combine in her work with literary flourish and an old world sensibility.

Another highly formative part of Francesca's inspiration comes from her Steiner education in Bristol and Gloucestershire, where there was a strong emphasis on handwork, drawing, and an appreciation of nature and spirit. After completing a degree in English literature at Bristol University, she trained to become an English teacher. Already then, however, the doodles and sketches which cover her folders and notes suggest that her heart was captivated by the world of illustration and crafts. Initially creating beautiful illustrated stories and "name paintings" for her own sons, friends were soon asking her to make something similar for them - and the word has gone on spreading.
